The secondary principles didn't really effect my principles but it definitely opened my eyes up to both sides of the argument. I don't really know which one I would be more comfortable with saying is my principle towards abortion because both Warren and Noonan makes very good arguments.
However, if I thought about if I were to put myself in that situation where abortion was an option, I thought that 'yes' I would go along with it and it's because I feel it is my body and I would want to be able to do what I want with it whether the fetus is considered a human being or not. Which goes along with what Warren said about a woman's body is their property and they should be allowed to do what they want with it.
I think the theory that was least consistent with my personal beliefs on abortion were Noonan's beliefs. Especially when he says that the fetus has the inability to speak for itself so that makes it wrong. Well, of course it hasn't got the ability to speak for itself, it hasn't even been welcomed into society or knows where it is for that matter.
The one thing that did correlate with my beliefs however was that at the end of Noonan's piece he mentions that Christians believe that we should love thy neighbor as we love ourselves. This shows that my personal principles way need some adjusting because it's hypocritical of me to say that I believe everyone should be treated as we ourselves wish to be treated but be okay with abortion.
This week I commented on: http://ashantijones.blogspot.com/ and http://ndeahterry.blogspot.com/
In my blog I said that Noonan was the most consistent with my beliefs while warren was the least. My views are highly correlated with religion so they would push me to be against abortion, while your views clearly steer you in the opposite direction.
ReplyDeleteIt is hypocritical that some but not all who oppose abortion promote capital punishment.. either way you are ABORTING/TERMINATING A HUMAN BEING!
ReplyDeleteMy faith plays little in this issue but i consider that the final authority over life/death are divine authorities. But consider why abortions happen?
Governments are at war against access to CONTRACEPTIVES courtesy of right wing lobbyists. Contraceptives are not abortion, it is a deterrent and high schools should also be well equipped in teaching youths proper Sex Ed.
Consider also that criminalzing abortion for the religious few can open the doors to organized crime and of course induced deaths because women try to abort their pregnancies themselves. Even the most tochiest issue, I always consider public safety.
I agree. I didnt agree with Noonen's arguments either. Fetuses can't think or feel, so they have no voice. They're simply a part of the mother until birth.
ReplyDeleteI don't think you should feel so bad about what you wrote in your last paragraph. One values a neighbor because a neighbor acts like a human being, has empathy, reason and can think for itself. A fetus on the other hand has none of those human qualities so one could make an argument that it is not much of a neighbor yet.
ReplyDeleteconsidering my sister just had a baby I'm all about pro life. Yes I agree that it is a women's body and hence should be her choice if she chooses to bear a child and I know that I am sounding hypocritical but I also agree that the baby has rights. Since I've learned how conception actually happens and how it really only takes days to start the process of development and mitosis occurs. I feel at that point there is life foring in you and you should be responsible for that being that's currently forming. Maybe it has to do with my principles that I strongly agree with pro life or it's the fact that I just held my niece last night. I don't think you need those steps to dictate weather you should be considered a human being or not
ReplyDeleteMy views were the opposite of yours. I am pro-life and believe that once conceived the unborn child's rights should come befoe the mothers. However, I don't think you should feel bad about your opinion like you mentioned. How you feel right now is on way, but untilyou are actually placed in the situation you never really know what you would do. You could change your mind.
